When ink smudges on packaging paper or paperboard, it's tempting to start looking for a faster-drying coating material. But before comparing materials, it's worth taking a closer look at the problem. When does the smudge appear, and what is happening to the sheet at that point?

You don't need a detailed report to start the discussion. A clear description of the paper, ink and problem is a useful place to begin.
1. Describe when the problem appears
Do you see the mark straight after printing, when the sheets are stacked, or when someone handles the printed surface? Note how much time has passed since printing and what the surface has come into contact with.
If the problem started after a change on the production line, mention that too. These details help us understand what needs to be investigated before suggesting a material.
2. Identify the substrate and ink system
Tell us what you're printing on: coated paper, label paper or paperboard. Include the printing method and ink system, and let us know whether you're developing a new coating or adapting an existing one.
For our fast-drying boehmite, performance depends on the whole system, including the formulation, substrate, coating weight, ink and processing conditions. Knowing the material name alone won't tell us how it will perform on your line.
3. Describe the current process and recent changes
A brief outline of your coating and printing process is enough for the first conversation. Explain how the current system is used and whether anything changed before the problem appeared.
We can discuss formulation details, coating conditions and drying settings directly as the evaluation moves forward. For now, the aim is to understand the current setup and what you want to improve.
4. Agree on the evaluation target
Before trying a different material, agree on what a good result would look like. When will you check the print, and how will you handle or rub the surface? Keep those conditions consistent when comparing results.
Also note the qualities you need to retain, such as image appearance and coating integrity. A promising result in another formulation is a starting point for discussion, but the material still needs to be tested under your own processing and end-use conditions.
Where Boehmax's fast-drying boehmite fits
Boehmax Fast-Drying Boehmite for Packaging Inkjet Coatings is designed for ink-receptive coatings on paper and paperboard. Typical applications include coated packaging papers, fast-dry inkjet and label papers, and coated paperboard.
If you're working on one of these applications, we can discuss whether this product is a suitable candidate for your trials. The next step is to evaluate it in your coating system, against the requirements that matter to your project.
Discuss your application: Tell us what you're printing on, which ink system you use and when the smudging appears. That gives us a practical starting point for discussing material selection and planning an evaluation.
