Boehmite Sample Evaluation: What to Prepare for Ink-Receptive Coating Trials

February 16, 2026

Before requesting a boehmite sample, decide what you want the trial to tell you. Are you evaluating ink absorption under a heavy ink load, investigating smudging, or comparing a candidate material with the one you currently use?

For manufacturers evaluating boehmite for ink-receptive coatings, that context gives the supplier a useful starting point. A technical data sheet can help identify a candidate, but suitability still needs to be evaluated with your substrate, ink system and processing conditions.

You do not need a full technical report to start the conversation. A short application brief and a clear evaluation plan are enough to begin discussing the next step.

Start with your application and the problem

Describe the media you make, the substrate you coat and the printing conditions the finished media needs to handle. Include your ink system if it is known. An ink-receptive coating for high-ink-load advertising media may have different priorities from one developed for photo imaging media.

Explain the issue as specifically as you can. “We want better print quality” leaves several questions open. “Smudging appears when the printed surface is handled shortly after printing” gives the discussion a clearer direction. This is an example of how to describe a problem, not a diagnosis of its cause.

Separate what you have observed from what you suspect. The complete coating system may need to be reviewed before a material recommendation is useful.

Three questions to consider before a trial

A few questions can help you focus your ink-receptive coating trial:

1. What media are you developing? Think about the substrate and ink system the coating needs to work with.

2. What would you like to improve? It might be ink absorption, drying, gloss or overall image quality.

3. What are you comparing against? Your current material or coating can provide a useful reference for the trial.

Define the boehmite sample evaluation before testing

Agree on the main question the trial should answer. An ink-receptive coating evaluation plan should identify the reference material or existing coating, the properties to assess, the assessment method, the planned trial date and the person responsible for feedback.

For each priority, describe what an acceptable result would look like in your application. If ink absorption is the main concern, also identify any gloss or image-quality requirements that must be maintained. A single favorable result does not establish suitability for the finished media.

Record the conditions used for the reference and candidate materials. If the formulation, coating weight, substrate, ink system or drying conditions differ, make those differences visible when reviewing the results. This helps clarify what the comparison does—and does not—show.

Review the TDS and confirm sample arrangements

A technical data sheet helps you review the material’s intended application and stated properties. It does not replace a trial in your own coating system. Keep the document version with your evaluation notes so the material discussion and trial record refer to the same information.

Once the application and trial plan are clear, confirm sample quantity, availability, packaging, any sample or freight charges, and shipping details. These arrangements should be agreed for the specific request.

Discuss a candidate for your ink-receptive coating

For high-ink-load digital inkjet media, Boehmax High-Absorbency Boehmite for Ink-Receptive Coatings is a candidate to discuss when ink uptake is a priority. Suitability depends on the complete formulation, coating weight, substrate, ink system and processing conditions. A project led primarily by gloss requirements needs its own selection discussion.

To start a focused conversation, tell us what you coat, which ink system you use, the problem you want to investigate and what a successful trial would show. Discuss your application with Boehmax so we can review the relevant material information and the next evaluation step.
